The way you look at me

The way
You look at me
When you think
I’m not looking….
Tells me….
Your heart’s
A sleeping giant
Worn out
By someone
You loved before me.
I see you’re scared
Unconvinced by
What I’ve tried to say;

And that nothing

I’ve heard this a thousand times: “What you do in secret shows your true character. What you are when no one is watching is who you really are.” Under this unfortunate mindset, God is the boogey man, watching you constantly to see every little wrong thing you do. He is the divine police man, ready to give you a ticket around every turn. How I hate this “God”! I chime in with King David:

13 “Turn Thy gaze away from me, that I may smile again, Before I depart and am no more.”
(Psalms 39:13, NASB).

I’m with King David, I can’t stand the thought of living in that universe. This is life under the old covenant, and the life that most evangelical preachers would have us live under. Jesus may have died for our past, but now we must press forward with our sanctification. Don’t be deceived! If you are sexually sinful or covetous or greedy or a drunkard, God will GET YOU! (1 Corinthians 6:9,10).

This isn’t the way this works at all! We have entered the universe of grace! We have only recently entered this universe, so we are constantly doubting it. God sees the way we look and act in secret, and He knows we doubt and fail. He is saying to us:

I know that you know
But I’ll sing it again;
I love you!
Nothing will take Me away!

If there is no grace for our secret doubts and sins, there is obviously no grace at all. He is not looking for a veneer of behavioral integrity! He is in love! He is looking for a secret heart of love in us, watching for affection. He forgives so easily, so quickly, so abundantly, because He is in love! He dysfunctionally wants to make this work, and He has discarded all His safe boundaries. Even though we crucify Him, He still loves us.

Nothing will take Him away. The way we look at Him when we think He’s not looking doesn’t sway Him at all. But … I find I’m in love too! How could I say no to so great a love? GOD … LOVES … ME? That’s crazy isn’t it? But that’s what you’re being asked to believe. Believing it is the “work” (John 6:29).

Father! Thank You for the great love You have for us! It is my true joy! Find love in me in my secret look! Amen.

  1. Wouldn’t it be nice to take off our masks and have integrity without duplicity with one another in the body of Christ and quit this legalistic, joy killing jargon that you so eloquently pointed out.
