I had the very great privilege of preaching again at the local homeless shelter, Lighthouse Mission, in Bellingham. Don’t think I’m anything great – my pastor actually works there and occasionally calls me to fill in if someone isn’t going to show up. I preached on the woman at the well (read this here) and I noticed that I had no problem with receptiveness! It was electric, and a lot of people had a lot of great comments. I remember other conversations with more educated and affluent persons, and the whole idea of law and gospel, guilt and forgiveness, seems ancillary and unneeded at best. I remember how the sinners all loved to follow Jesus around while the pharisees complained about it (Luke 15:1-2), and it seems that God is still in the very same love affair with ragamuffins as ever.
Thank You God! I am one! I identify with these, I stand in great need of Your grace and mercy! I am humbled to be numbered among them. I know I am not even worthy of this! I only claim Your grace and Your blood, it is my only confession.
